June 10, 2019 OMMS PTSA Agenda

Last Month of School

The weather is warm and the countdown to summer is fast approaching! The OMMS PTSA has been honored to support many school and community projects this year. We hope that we can continue to do that next year.

WE NEED YOUR HELP to make sure that this PTSA remains an active chapter. Not all of our current board members are able to stay on. Please consider one of the following board positions:
President
Vice President of Fundraising
Vice President of Communications
Treasurer
Secretary

The time commitment is only 1 year, for a few hours a month (typical months are 3-4 hours including meetings, special event months might be 5-8 hours over the month). Being on the Board gives you direct contact with the Principals so that you get to learn first about the awesome stuff going at the school and it is a great way to connect with other parents. The OMMS Staff provides lots of support!

Responsibilities:

President--organizes and leads monthly meetings, coordinates events with school staff, advocates for the students, families, and staff of OMMS

Treasurer--keep full account of all monies, transactions, receipts, etc.

VP of Fundraising--determines what types of fundraisers to do and how to promote them

VP of Communications--responsible for communicating important PTSA or community information to parents, students, and staff through email, social media, and the website.

Secretary--responsible for typing meeting minutes (notes) during meetings.

Please email the Nominating Committee at vpcomm at ommsptsa.org to ask a question or to submit a statement of interest (a sentence or two about why you are interested).

Thanks!
Amy Brooks

Updates

Spring is just around the corner!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Falcon Family Fun Night! It was a treat to see the students and families talking and having fun. We hope to have another Family Night in the Spring, hopefully outside.

The 1st Annual Black History Month Door Decorating Contest was an amazing display of creativity and information. You can see all of the doors on our Facebook Page and on the school's Twitter page.

Upcoming Events:
February 26th: Restaurant Day at Bertucci's 11am-10pm, show the flier and our PTSA will receive 25% of the sales. Please share!

February 27th: Soul Night at the Café as we celebrate Black History Month. The program, sponsored by BSAP, includes a guest speaker, student readings about MLK, Step Show from Wilde Lake High School, selections from our very own OMMS Jazz Band, and soul food! For more information please contact Charles Tate at charles_tate@hcpss.org.

Note: There will be no PTSA meeting in March. Join us in April for another parent information night.

Mental Health Resources

Dr. Krystal Lewis presented Youth Anxiety: What Parents Need to Know at the January 7, 2019 meeting. A copy of the slideshow including some notes from the presentation can be found here: Youth Anxiety Presentation. Dr. Lewis specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy so the information given in the presentation is from the perspective of helping children face the anxiety and manage their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings.

Dr. Lewis recommended the following to help parents and children learn more about anxiety, strategies to manage it, and treatment options:

Helping Your Anxious Child: A Step-by-Step Guide for Parents by Ron Rapee
Outsmarting Worry: An Older Kids Guide to Managing Anxiety by Dawn Huebner
Calming Your Anxious Child: Words to Say and Things to Do by Kathleen Trainor
The Worry Workbook for Teens by Jamie Micco
Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens: A Workbook to Break the Nine Thought Habits That Are Holding You Back by Mary Alvord

Happy New Year!

We will start off the New Year with a discussion of Childhood Anxiety.

The OMMS PTSA is proud to host Dr. Krystal M. Lewis at our next meeting, Monday, January 7th from 6-8:30pm. (Dr. Lewis will speak until 7; PTSA meeting will follow).

Dr. Lewis received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Virginia Tech. She completed fellowships at Lurie Children's Hospital of Northwestern in Chicago and at the University of Illinois at Chicago for further specialization in child anxiety. Her research interests include the identification and treatment of anxiety in youth. At Monday's meeting, Dr. Lewis will discuss ways to identify anxious children and implement preventative steps to help them thrive in school and at home.

Please mark your calendar and plan to join us as we learn ways to better support all children. 🙂Feel free to invite other parents and educators in your community who may benefit from this topic. We would like to reach as many adults as possible with this event.

Happy December!

It's that hectic time of year when everyone is bustling through frosty streets to get ready for the holidays. At OMMS, we are excited to celebrate our students and staff as we close out 2018. Join us at our monthly meeting at 6:30pm on Monday, December 10th in the OMMS Media Center/Library. Erin Smart will join us to discuss the JumpStart program at Oakland Mills High School. This program is only offered in select HCPSS schools and our high school just happens to be one of them! Come to learn more about this opportunity for your student. We will also be discussing all of the grants we have received and ones we have recently applied for! We need your feedback and ideas!

Mark your calendar for our remaining meetings this school year:
(2nd Mondays/6:30pm in the OMMS Media Center/Library)

Greetings, OMMS families!

I'm honored to serve as your PTSA president for the 2018-19 school year and I hope to represent your interests with grace and enthusiasm.

We have several new officers this year, but we are still open to a few more parent volunteers. If you have an interest in representing us in greater Oakland Mills, HCPSS, or Maryland spaces, please consider being a PTA Council of Howard County delegate. You get to attend and vote at meetings that directly impact our community and your child and then bring that information back to our PTSA. We would also like to get a volunteer for the Cultural Arts Chair to oversee the planning of assemblies and field trips for our students.

Please mark your calendar for our first PTSA general meeting on Monday, September 24th at 6:30pm. We will meet in the OMMS Media Center and review and vote on this year's budget. This will be the perfect time to meet other OMMS parents and staff. During this first meeting we will also discuss some new initiatives that will be offered this school year and we'll introduce you to some community organizations that will be supporting our work with Restorative Justice Circles. You'll even get to briefly sit "in circle" to see what it's like!

Together we will work with you, the staff at OMMS, and the Oakland Mills community to make this year more enriching than ever before!

Yours,
Amy Brooks
